Joseph Rueschenberg, son of Frank and Theresa Hense Rueschenberg, was born January 10, 1841, in Westphalia, Germany. Rueschenberg was a shoemaker. He was apprenticed to a shoemaker for three years and then worked at his trade for three more years in different German cities. By this time he had reached the age when he must serve in the Germany army, and for three more years, did so. On October 17, 1867, he married Josephine Sasse, (12/26/1844-3/10/1914, daughter of the Joseph Sasse's of Germany. Their children: Frank, married Mary Ruden; Robert, married Kate Mumchrad; Joseph, married Edith Hinrichs; Ernest, married Nell Corbett;Christenia, married Frank Mages; Elizabeth, married John Bloom; Clara; and two who died in infancy . Rueschenberg was the Westphalia postmaster and the first secretary of the Westphalia Mutual Fire Insurance Company as well as one of its organizers.

Joseph married Josephine (Maria Josepha) SASSE, daughter of Joseph SASSE and Maria Catherine HIERCHEOTTER, on 17 Oct 1867. (Josephine (Maria Josepha) SASSE was born on 26 Dec 1844, died on 10 Mar 1914 and was buried in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery, Westphalia, Shelby, IA, USA.)
